The Power of Obedient Worship

Insights from C4’s Worship Leaders

In a world where worship styles often divide churches, there’s something beautiful about witnessing unity in diversity. In this month’s episode of the Leading By Following podcast, two worship leaders from different musical backgrounds – Lennie Tucker and Justin Dodson – share their insights on what makes worship truly powerful – and it has less to do with style and everything to do with obedience to God.

The full episode of my discussion with Lennie and Justin was released earlier today (Thursday, April 23) on all of our platforms [CLICK HERE TO WATCH] or [CLICK HERE TO LISTEN] – please don’t miss it. What follows are just some highlights from what they shared. Enjoy, and let’s ask the Holy Spirit to work in us through His truth that was shared. Amen!

What Makes Worship Truly Blessed by God?

When examining why God blesses certain worship ministries, three key principles emerge that transcend musical style or preference.

Faithfulness to God’s Word

The foundation of blessed (anointed) worship begins with unwavering commitment to Scripture. As Lennie explains, “In Proverbs, it speaks of being faithful to His Word. Because we have taken a stand to be faithful to His Word, He says in his scripture that we will be blessed because of it.”

This faithfulness isn’t about rigid traditionalism, but about grounding everything in biblical truth. When worship leaders prioritize God’s Word above personal preferences or popular trends, they create space for genuine spiritual encounter with God in the context of worship.

Worshiping in Spirit and Truth

True worship combines both spiritual authenticity and biblical accuracy. “‘When we worship him, we worship him in Spirit and in truth,’” is our biblical mandate from Jesus in John 4:24. This means worship isn’t just about emotional experience or doctrinal correctness alone – it requires both elements working together.

The Spirit brings life, creativity, and genuine heart connection. The truth component ensures everything aligns with God’s character and commands as revealed in Scripture.

Obedience Over Preference

Perhaps the most challenging aspect of blessed worship is choosing obedience to God’s leading over personal comfort zones. Lennie and Justin agreed that they lead by trying to be obedient to God’s leading, not by what is going on around them, what other people are doing; but instead by, “What does the Holy Spirit want us to do?

This obedience often requires stepping into uncomfortable territory, trying new approaches, or maintaining practices that may not be personally preferred but are spiritually directed.

How Do You Know When God Is Leading in Worship?

Discerning God’s voice in worship planning and execution requires intentional spiritual disciplines and community wisdom.

Prayer and Scripture Study

The primary way God speaks is through His Word, making regular Bible study essential for worship leaders. Combined with prayer, this creates the foundation for hearing God’s voice clearly. As Lennie explains, “I read God’s word, let it speak to me. And prayer. And I ask for things to specifically things I want to be revealed to me.”

Listening to the Holy Spirit

Beyond Scripture study, worship leaders must cultivate sensitivity to the Holy Spirit’s promptings. This might mean changing planned songs, extending worship time, or trying something completely different from the original plan.

Justin shared how this works practically: “I’ll get to the end of the day, spend some time with the Lord before I go to bed. And then you wake up in the morning, it’s like, there’s a plan and didn’t come from me.” Amen, right?!

Community Confirmation

God also speaks through the body of believers. Ideas from choir members, band members, or congregation members can carry spiritual weight when they align with Scripture and resonate in the leader’s heart through prayer.

What Are the Biggest Challenges in Worship Ministry?

Even blessed ministries face significant challenges that require wisdom and grace to navigate.

Pleasing God Over People

The greatest challenge many worship leaders face is ensuring their motivation remains pure. “The biggest challenge is always making sure that what I’m doing is pleasing to God and not just doing something that makes me happy or that I like or that is pleasing to people in the congregation.”

While considering the congregation’s needs is very important, the primary audience for worship must always be God himself. Both Lennie and Justin do a great job managing this tension, and it’s one of the reasons why worship here at C4 is so meaningful and powerful.

Managing Abundant Volunteers

Chapin Christian is one of the churches that faces the blessed problem of having more willing volunteers than available positions. This requires wisdom in rotation schedules, clear communication, and helping people understand that everyone’s contribution matters even if they can’t serve every week.

Balancing Tradition and Innovation

Traditional worship faces the challenge of avoiding traditionalism – the attitude that says, “we’ve never done it that way before.” Healthy traditional worship maintains the richness of historic faith expressions while remaining open to the Holy Spirit’s fresh leading.

Why Do Some Churches Struggle with Worship Style Divisions?

Many churches experience pretty intense tension between traditional and contemporary worship preferences, but this doesn’t have to be the case and is not the case here at C4.

The Heart Behind Dual Track Worship

Some churches successfully offer both traditional and contemporary services with equal emphasis and support. This “dual track” approach recognizes that different people connect with God through different musical expressions, and both can be equally valid when done with excellence and spiritual authenticity. We’ve worked really hard over the years to try and make sure that anyone interested in Jesus – regardless of their spiritual background or stylistic preferences – can connect with Him in worship here.

The key for that continuing to happen is avoiding the trap where one style becomes dominant and the other becomes an afterthought designed merely to appease a small group.

Unity in Diversity

When worship leaders from different styles work together with mutual respect and shared vision, it demonstrates the unity of the body of Christ. The goal isn’t uniformity but unity – one church, one Savior, multiple expressions of worship.

What Makes a Worship Team Special?

Exceptional worship teams share certain characteristics that go beyond musical talent.

Love for Jesus First

The foundation of any great worship team is genuine love for Christ. When team members are motivated by their relationship with Jesus rather than performance or recognition, it shows in their service and attitude.

Willingness to Serve

Great team members consistently say “yes” when asked to serve, even when it’s inconvenient. They approach opportunities with “I’ll try” rather than looking for excuses to decline.

Commitment and Dedication

Many worship team members serve faithfully for years or even decades as volunteers, demonstrating remarkable commitment to their calling. This long-term dedication creates stability and excellence in ministry.

How Can Worship Leaders Stay Sensitive to the Holy Spirit?

Maintaining spiritual sensitivity while managing practical responsibilities requires intentional practices.

Flexibility in the Moment

Sometimes the Holy Spirit moves during worship in ways that weren’t planned. Wise worship leaders learn to recognize these moments and adjust accordingly, whether that means extending a song, changing the planned order, or creating space for response.

Regular Spiritual Disciplines

Consistent prayer, Bible study, and time listening to God outside of ministry responsibilities keeps worship leaders spiritually sharp and ready to hear God’s voice during services.

Humility and Teachability

The best worship leaders maintain humility, recognizing that “anything good I do, he gets the credit for that.” YES!! This attitude keeps them dependent on God rather than relying on their own abilities or experience.

Life Application

Whether you’re a worship leader, team member, or someone in the congregation, the principles of obedient worship apply to your life. This week, challenge yourself to approach your relationship with God – and any leadership role you have – with the same heart of obedience these worship leaders do their very best to demonstrate.

Consider these questions as you reflect on your own spiritual journey:

  • Am I more concerned with pleasing God or pleasing people in my service and worship?
  • How can I better listen for God’s voice through Scripture, prayer, and community?
  • What areas of my life require me to step out of my comfort zone in obedience to God?
  • How can I serve others with the same willing heart these worship team members display?

The key to blessed worship – and blessed living – isn’t about style, talent, or preference. It’s about faithfully listening to God’s voice and obediently doing what He says, even when it’s difficult or different from what we expected. When we approach worship and life with this heart of obedience, we create space for God to work in ways that exceed our imagination.

Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power  that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen. – Ephesians 3:20-21 [NIV]
