A Journey of Transition and Faith
Leadership transitions in churches can be (almost always are) challenging. Why? Because change is hard. But when God orchestrates the process, beautiful things happen. Pastor John Dukes’ journey from worship / youth pastor to lead pastor at Chapin Christian Community Church demonstrates how God prepares hearts and opens doors in His perfect timing.
How Did God Prepare Pastor John for Leadership?
John’s path to pastoral leadership wasn’t traditional. Originally from Georgia, his family moved to South Carolina when he was in fifth grade – a move that seemed devastating at the time but proved to be a part of God’s perfect plan. Because it was in South Carolina where John met Daniel, who led him to the Lord and taught him what it meant to have a relationship with Jesus.
After serving in churches in Abbeville and Fountain Inn, John connected with Chapin Christian Community Church through a worship school called 10,000 Fathers. When a friend (shoutout to Dustin Serrano) asked him to lead worship for a student camp, John’s band served at the church, and he immediately felt drawn to the church family.
The FedEx Truck Interview
Sometimes God’s calling comes in unexpected ways. John’s interview for the worship pastor position happened while he was working for FedEx, taking the call from a gas station in his FedEx uniform. Despite technical difficulties and what he describes as “the best worst interview,” God’s favor was evident, and he joined the staff in July 2017.
What Sparked the Leadership Transition?
The transition didn’t happen overnight. During COVID, John expressed feeling like “nothing more than a singer of songs.” This conversation became a turning point, revealing his heart for deeper ministry and leadership. When given opportunities to preach, John’s gifts became evident to the congregation and leadership.
The church had moved from a solo preacher model to team teaching, which provided John with more preaching opportunities. This wasn’t initially planned as succession preparation, but God was clearly at work behind the scenes.
The Succession Plan Process
After leaving their denomination in June 2023, the church’s personnel team recognized the need for a succession plan. They spent months in prayer, seeking God’s direction. In April 2024, after careful consideration and prayer, thoroughly vetting John as a candidate, they approached him about becoming C4’s next lead pastor.
What Has the Transition Been Like?
Three months into his role as lead pastor, John describes the experience as marked by God’s kindness. The congregation has shown remarkable unity and graciousness throughout the transition. Rather than resistance to change, there’s been excitement and a “wheels up” mentality – everyone ready to move forward together toward God’s preferred future.
The Greatest Challenges
John identifies several key challenges in his new role:
- Balancing responsibilities while completing his Master’s in Spiritual Formation and Leadership
- Managing expectations and staying at “the pace of Jesus” rather than rushing ahead
- Understanding the weight of his words – realizing that his voice now carries a little more authority than before
- Feeling the burden for every member’s needs while recognizing his human limitations
What’s the Vision Moving Forward?
John emphasizes that the church isn’t heading in a new direction but taking the next steps in the direction they’ve already been walking. Like the transition from Moses to Joshua, the destination remains the same – the promised land – but some strategies and methodologies may look different.
His vision includes:
- Raising up the next generation of believers and leaders
- Sending out 3-5 missionary units to the field within the next 5-10 years
- Experiencing God’s presence in revival-like ways
- Living out “on earth as it is in heaven” in this community
How Does Faith Sustain Leadership?
Throughout the transition, John has learned to depend more deeply on God. He’s discovered that the gospel isn’t just the diving board – it’s the pool. Even as a pastor, he must continually swim in / live in God’s grace and strength rather than his own abilities.
The reminder that “the Lord builds the house” has been crucial. While John labors with the strength he has, he recognizes that ultimate success depends on God, not human effort. This perspective allows him to live with open hands, trusting God with the outcomes while remaining faithful in obedience.
Life Application
Pastor John’s journey reminds us that God often prepares us for our calling through unexpected circumstances. What seems like a setback – like moving away from home or working a job that doesn’t match our dreams – may actually be God’s preparation for something greater.
This week, consider how God might be preparing you for your next step of faith.
Are you willing to trust His timing and process, even when it doesn’t make sense?
Remember that God is responsible for the outcomes; you’re only responsible for obedience.
Questions for Reflection:
- What circumstances in your life that seemed negative at the time can you now see as God’s preparation?
- Are you trying to carry burdens that belong to God rather than trusting Him with the outcomes?
- How is God calling you to take the “next step” in the direction you’re already walking?
- What would it look like for you to live with “open hands” this week, trusting God’s plan over your own?
