When I’m Old and Grey

2–3 minutes

The Testimony I Desire

After reading that heading, if you know me, you just have to be thinking …

When you’re old and grey? When? Umm, bro, you do still use a mirror, right?”

Yes I do.

And yes I am. Old [to an extent] and grey [to the fullest extent].

Yes, I see in the mirror the reality of life.

And it’s totally okay.

The title at the top is a line from a really great song. It’s a song I mentioned in passing months ago to our son Andrew, telling him how much I love the song’s message, “No One Ever Cared for Me Like Jesus” [by Steffany Gretzinger, 2020]. The first verse gets me every time:

“If my heart could tell a story

If my life would sing a song

If I have a testimony

If I have anything at all

No one ever cared for me like Jesus

His faithful hand has held me all this way

And when I’m old and grey

And all my days are numbered on the earth

Let it be known in You alone

My joy was found”

Those words so reflect the longing of my heart.

That I would live a life that glorifies Jesus by treasuring Him in such ways that my greatest joy is truly found in Him.

Oh, if that could be my testimony!

And that in no way means that I don’t find great joy in the gift of my amazing wife Michelle, our incredible son Andrew, his precious bride Morgan, and their beautiful kids Lucy and Miller. It doesn’t mean that I do not experience joy from other people, from things like good meals or the occasional (recently, much too occasional) big win by the Clemson football team.

It just means that I recognize that all joy producing gifts come from my loving Heavenly Father. The greatest of those gifts being eternal life in and through His Son, Jesus.

May my greatest joy be found in the One who gives me joy.

Oh, if my life would sing that song!

Oh, if all of our lives would sing that song in perfect harmony!

Glory to our Joy-Giver!!

Love you guys, -Jody

PS – As a part of an amazing video [created by C4’s Courtney Dox, thank you CD!!] that was shown recently, Andrew gave me one of the sweetest gifts I’ve ever received. Remembering how much the Gretzinger song means to me — he taught it to Lucy and Miller and they played and sang it for me. Oh my goodness, talk about an incredible gift of joy! 49 of the best seconds of my life!!
