The Impact of Godly Grandmothers and Mothers
I attended a funeral this past Saturday afternoon. The mother of a dear friend of mine had gone on to be with Jesus. The pastor told a story about how my friend’s grandmother and mother had been so faithful to point my friend to Jesus. He referenced this verse …
“I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.” -2 Timothy 1:5 [NIV]
And in that moment, I was reminded of how blessed I am to have had a grandmother and mother who so lovingly and faithfully did the same for me. Actually, both of my grandmothers were amazing examples of Jesus and His love. [I guess the Lord knew I needed extra help! 😊]
I don’t know, but I’m guessing there are millions and millions of us who know and love Jesus primarily because of Godly grandmothers and mothers.
Is that your story?
As I spent some time thinking about this, I found myself wondering why there aren’t more of us who point to Godly grandfathers and fathers who pointed us to Jesus.
- Do too many men see their job as providing for their families materially but not spiritually?
- Do too many men not understand what the “main thing” is? [The main thing? Knowing Jesus and making Him known, and nothing else comes close].
- Do too many men see Jesus/Church as nothing more than “a woman’s thing”?
I certainly don’t have all the answers. But I sure am glad I had the grandmothers and the mother the Lord gave me.
I’m so very thankful for Louise Thigpen (my Maa Maa), Beatrice Flowers (my Granny Bea) and Mamie Flowers (my Momma). [I just teared up typing their names.] I don’t even want to think about where I would be today if not for what they did for me.
- Taking me to church. [Church took priority over me sleeping in, me playing ball, me wanting whatever I wanted other than going to church.]
- Teaching me about Jesus. Teaching me how to read His Word and how to pray.
- Showing me with their lives how a Christian should live.
So, to all of the Lois’s and Eunice’s out there, thank you for keeping the main thing the main thing. I know it’s not always easy, but you do it anyway.
And to all of us grandfathers and fathers, it’s not too late for us to do the same.

Thank You Father for blessing me beyond measure through three amazing women who loved me, cared for me, prayed for me, and pointed me to You. Thank You, thank You, thank You for my Lois’s and for my Eunice.
I love You Lord. Please help me to love You more. Amen.
